CHAPTER 8 – Noah Was Never the Experiment… Emma Was

The countdown reached fifty-three minutes.

Suddenly, every monitor inside the abandoned laboratory turned on.

Dr. Victor Hayes appeared on every screen.

He looked calm.

Almost cheerful.

"Welcome, Adrian."

"Welcome back, Emma."

Emma stared at the screen.

"You know me?"

Victor smiled.

"Oh, Emma..."

"I've known you longer than you know yourself."

He pressed a button.

An old hospital video appeared.

Emma gasped.

It was footage from the day Noah was born.

She watched nurses wheel her into surgery.

Then another woman entered the operating room.

Not a doctor.

A scientist.

Victor.

Emma whispered,

"That's impossible..."

Victor laughed softly.

"You've spent seven years believing Noah was my greatest experiment."

"He wasn't."

"You were."

Silence filled the room.

Victor continued.

"When you volunteered for that fertility program, you signed dozens of consent forms."

"You never read the final page."

Emma's heart pounded.

"What did you do to me?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"We modified your immune system."

"So your body could safely carry a genetically enhanced embryo."

Adrian shook his head.

"You're lying."

Victor calmly opened another file.

Emma's medical records.

Every blood test.

Every pregnancy scan.

Every hidden amendment.

All authentic.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"My God..."

Victor leaned closer to the camera.

"Noah isn't simply unique."

"Neither is Emma."

"Her DNA contains the only biological key capable of keeping Noah alive."

Adrian suddenly understood.

"That's why you poisoned him."

Victor nodded.

"I needed to activate the genetic sequence."

"And now..."

He smiled coldly.

"I need his mother."

At that exact second, a sniper's laser appeared on Emma's chest.

Red.

Perfectly still.

Adrian instinctively pushed her to the ground.

A deafening gunshot shattered the laboratory windows.

Glass exploded everywhere.

SWAT officers returned fire as chaos erupted.

Victor's image disappeared from every screen.

Only one final sentence remained.

"The countdown was never for Noah."

May you like

"It was for Emma."

To be continued...
