CHAPTER 9 – Emma Made the Choice No Mother Should Ever Have to Make

The sniper's bullet missed Emma by inches.
Glass rained across the abandoned laboratory as SWAT officers stormed every entrance.
"Protect Emma!" Adrian shouted.
But Victor Hayes was already gone.
Hidden speakers crackled to life.
"You still don't understand," Victor's calm voice echoed.
"You can't stop Phase Two."
The digital countdown reached 00:14:59.
Suddenly every monitor switched to a live video.
Noah.
He was alive.
Sitting alone inside a bright white room.
A small IV ran into his arm.
He looked frightened but unharmed.
"Mommy?"
His tiny voice shattered Emma's heart.
"I'm here, sweetheart!" Emma screamed toward the screen.
Noah smiled weakly.
"I knew you'd find me."
Before Emma could say another word, Victor stepped into the frame behind Noah.
He gently placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.
"If anyone enters this room..."
"...the poison finishes its job."
Emma lunged toward the monitor.
"You monster!"
Victor ignored her.
Instead, he looked directly at Adrian.
"I'll make this simple."
"You may save Noah..."
"Or save the research capable of curing millions."
Adrian clenched his fists.
"What research?"
Victor smiled.
"The genetic code inside Emma and Noah."
"It can eliminate hundreds of inherited diseases."
"It can rewrite medicine forever."
Emma stared at him in horror.
"So that's what this was always about?"
Victor nodded.
"You called it kidnapping."
"I call it the future."
Then his expression darkened.
"But the treatment requires one thing."
Emma already knew the answer.
"My life."
Victor smiled.
"Exactly."
Silence consumed the room.
Emma slowly turned toward Adrian.
"If sacrificing me saves Noah..."
Adrian grabbed her shoulders.
"No."
"There has to be another way."
Emma looked at her son on the screen.
She smiled through tears.
"I've already made my choice."
She quietly walked toward the laboratory exit.
Ignoring everyone trying to stop her.
Outside...
a black helicopter slowly descended onto the roof.
Its side door slid open.
Victor's voice came through a loudspeaker.
"Come alone."
Emma took one final look at Adrian.
"Promise me..."
"No matter what happens..."
"You save our son."
Then she stepped aboard the helicopter.
As it disappeared into the night sky...
Adrian noticed something Emma had secretly slipped into his hand.
A tiny silver flash drive.
