Chapter 1 - The Confession in the CorridorThe door clicked shut behind me as I finally retreated to Room 1218, leaving Rachel Lawson standing in Room 1216 with my face burning hotter than a June asphalt in Texas. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Tyler Bennett, I scolded myself, dropping my shopping bags onto the king-sized bed. You take down 300-pound linebackers for a living. Why are you sweating bullets just because your sister’s best friend walked out of a shower?

Because it wasn't just any friend. It was Rachel. Smart, sharp-tongued, drop-dead gorgeous Rachel, who had spent the last five years acting like I was a slightly annoying younger brother even though we were only two years apart.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was a text from my sister, Amanda: “Hotel check-in go smooth, big guy? Enjoy the weekend! Don't break anything!”

I stared at the screen, my thumb flying across the keyboard with righteous fury.

Tyler: "Smooth? You absolute psychopath, you gave me the key to Rachel’s room!"

A full minute passed. Then, three little dots danced on the screen.

Amanda: "💀💀💀 NO WAY. You didn't..."

Tyler: "I walked in while she was fresh out of the shower. She was wearing a robe, Amanda! A white, fluffy, terrifyingly minimalist hotel robe!"

Amanda: "I am screaming. This is the greatest thing that has ever happened. Please tell me you looked respectful."

Tyler: "I stared at the wallpaper like it was the Rosetta Stone. I need to leave this hotel immediately. I'm changing rooms."

Amanda: "Don't you dare! Rachel texted me two seconds ago saying you looked like a lost golden retriever. Just stay put. We’re all meeting down at the lobby bar in twenty minutes. Try not to hyperventilate."

I groaned, tossing my phone onto the mattress. A hot shower sounded amazing, but the thought of facing Rachel again downstairs made me want to fake a career-ending knee injury. Little did I know, the key swap wasn't a clumsy mistake at all. It was the opening move in a game neither of us was prepared to play.
