Chapter 10 - The Unexpected EndingTwo days later, the news broke nationwide: “Wall Street Tycoon Marcus Vance Arrested in Luxury Hotel Raid Following Whistleblower Evidence.”

The three-day vacation with my sister was officially ruined, but nobody seemed to care. We had relocated from the chaotic Grand Horizon Hotel to a quiet, sun-drenched penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, courtesy of the federal witness protection logistics team.
Amanda had flown back to New York that morning, claiming she needed “at least a week of uninterrupted sleep” after surviving a kidnapping attempt and a hotel brawl.
That left just the two of us.
I was standing out on the balcony, leaning against the glass railing, holding two cups of black coffee as the Chicago breeze ruffled my hair. The sliding glass door clicked open, and Rachel stepped out onto the balcony, wrapped in a soft cashmere sweater.
She walked up beside me, resting her hands on the railing. She looked tired, but for the first time in months, her eyes looked completely free.
“Penny for your thoughts, big guy?” Rachel asked softly, turning her head to look up at me with a faint, knowing smile.
“I was just thinking,” I said, looking down at her, “that this all started because my sister gave me the wrong room key.”
Rachel laughed—a rich, genuine sound that made my chest tighten in the best possible way. She stepped closer, closing the distance between us until the space heater of her body heat chased away the morning chill.
“You know,” Rachel murmured, her voice dropping to a teasing whisper, “technically... you still owe me an apology for walking into my room without knocking while I was in the shower.”
I smiled, setting the coffee cups down on the small table, and gently looped my arms around her waist, pulling her flush against my chest.

“For the record,” I whispered, leaning down until my lips brushed her ear, “I consider it the best mistake of my entire life.”
Rachel didn't pull away. Instead, she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulled me down, and kissed me—softly, deeply, and with a fierce, burning passion that ended every secret we had kept for five years.
