Chapter 17 - The Final ConfessionBy noon, the FBI had fully secured Vance Global Financial Tower, carting away three more corporate conspirators and locking down the Zurich syndicate files once and for all. Marcus Vance’s legal defense was officially dead in the water; the new optical drive contained indisputable proof of systemic money laundering that would keep him behind bars for decades.

We were escorted back to the penthouse under heavy guard, but the heavy, suffocating cloud of danger had finally lifted.
Rachel and I stood out on the wide balcony again, watching the midday sun sparkle across the blue expanse of Lake Michigan. The city below was humming with ordinary life, completely unaware of the corporate war that had just been fought and won in its skies.
Rachel was holding a mug of tea, leaning against the glass railing while I stood close beside her, one arm wrapped around her waist.
“So,” Rachel said quietly, turning her head to look up at me. “The federal investigation is over. My name is cleared. The firm is restructuring under new oversight.”
“Sounds like you’re finally unemployed,” I teased gently. “Maybe you should look into a less stressful career. Like professional football.”
“Ha! I’d last about three seconds on an NFL gridiron before getting crushed by a 300-pound lineman,” she laughed, shaking her head. “Though I suppose I have a pretty good personal bodyguard trainer available.”
The laughter faded, replaced by that familiar, magnetic gravity that always seemed to pull us together. I turned her gently by the shoulders so she was facing me fully.
“Rachel,” I said, my voice dropping all pretense of jokes or bravado. “We’ve known each other for five years. We’ve survived family dinners, corporate espionage, hotel room key swaps, and tactical firefights.”
A soft, knowing smile spread across her face. “Are you leading somewhere specific with this resume review, Tyler?”
“I’m saying I’m done pretending I’m just your best friend’s annoying younger brother,” I said softly, reaching out to take both of her hands in mine. “I love you, Rachel. I think I’ve loved you for a very long time, and I am never checking out of this room.”

Rachel’s eyes shone with unshed tears of pure happiness. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms around my neck, pulling herself up on her tiptoes.
“Took you long enough, big guy,” she whispered against my lips.
