Chapter 14 - Operation Corporate SweepBy 7:00 AM the following morning, the luxury penthouse felt less like a romantic hideaway and more like a forward operating base. Two federal agents in tactical gear were checking communication earpieces by the kitchen island while Rachel finalized her secure laptop protocols at the dining table.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, lacing up my sneakers, my mind racing through every possible tactical scenario.
“You’re not seriously planning on coming with us, are you?” Rachel asked, looking up from her screen. She was dressed impeccably in a tailored navy blue pantsuit that screamed boardroom executive, though I could see the subtle tension in her shoulders.
“Try stopping me,” I replied, walking over and leaning against the back of her chair. “Federal protection is great, but last time I checked, federal agents didn't tackle Marcus’s lead goon through a glass coffee table.”
Rachel sighed, though a fond smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “This isn't a hotel room brawl, Tyler. This is Vance Global Financial Tower—a secure twenty-story fortress in the heart of downtown Chicago. If we walk in there, we are stepping right into a legal and corporate minefield.”
“All the more reason you need an offensive lineman watching your blind side,” I said gently, placing my hands on her shoulders.
Ten minutes later, a convoy of two unmarked black SUVs whisked us away from the safe house and down into the bustling financial district. The morning fog was heavy over Lake Michigan, casting a grey, cinematic shadow across the glass skyscrapers.
As we pulled into the underground parking garage of Vance Global Financial Tower, the air inside the vehicle grew thick with anticipation. Agent Miller gave us a final briefing.
“We have agents stationed at every elevator bank and stairwell,” Miller instructed, tapping her tablet. “Ms. Lawson, you will access the Level 15 terminal using your personal administrative override code. Download the Zurich syndicate files to the secure drive, and we’re out in under ten minutes. Any questions?”

“None,” Rachel said firmly.
“Let’s move,” I added, unbuckling my seatbelt.
