Chapter 11 - The Secret Safe House

The fallout from Marcus Vance’s arrest reverberated across Wall Street and professional sports headlines alike, but out in the sun-drenched sanctuary of the Chicago penthouse, the noise felt miles away. Federal prosecutors had locked down Marcus’s assets, freezing accounts and hauling in three more co-conspirators before the sun set on Tuesday.
Rachel sat cross-legged on the oversized cream-colored sofa, her laptop balanced on her knees, scrolling through a cascade of encrypted emails from the Department of Justice. The digital glow illuminated the sharp angles of her face, highlighting a look of profound relief that had been absent ever since she first blew the whistle on her former employer.
I walked in from the kitchen, carrying two mugs of freshly brewed dark roast coffee. The morning air coming off Lake Michigan was crisp, carrying the distant hum of city traffic far below us.
“You’ve been staring at that screen for three hours straight,” I said quietly, setting one of the mugs down on the reclaimed wood coffee table right beside her elbow. “If you stare hard enough, the federal prosecutors aren’t going to mail you a medal any faster.”
Rachel looked up, offering a tired yet genuine smile. She closed the laptop lid with a soft snap and stretched her arms over her head, the soft cashmere of her sweater shifting gracefully. “It’s just hard to believe it’s actually over, Tyler. For six months, I couldn’t walk down a street in New York without checking over my shoulder wondering if one of Marcus’s fixers was tracking my phone.”
I sat down on the opposite end of the sofa, leaning back and resting my arm along the backrest. “Well, you don’t have to look over your shoulder anymore. Not while I’m around.”
Rachel tilted her head, her dark eyes locking onto mine with a playful, testing glint. “Is that right? And just how long do you plan on sticking around, Captain Defense? Don’t you have minicamp or training drills starting up next week?”
“My coach can survive without me for another few days,” I replied smoothly, though the truth was, my entire world had tilted on its axis the moment she stepped out of that steamy hotel bathroom wearing nothing but a white robe. “Besides, Amanda made it very clear that if I leave you unguarded, she’ll never forgive me.”
“Amanda is currently sunbathing in Miami and ignoring my text messages,” Rachel laughed, taking a sip of the hot coffee. “She’s already planning our victory dinner, by the way. Apparently, she thinks she deserves a finder’s fee for accidentally swapping our room keys.”

“If she hadn't swapped those keys, we’d still be playing this exhausting game of pretending we’re just childhood friends who happen to run in the same circles,” I said, my voice dropping lower, losing its casual edge.
The air in the living room shifted instantly. The light banter evaporated, replaced by the heavy, electric tension that had been building ever since our kiss on the balcony. Rachel set her mug down slowly, her eyes never leaving mine.
