Chapter 11 - The Queen’s ReturnThe corporate tower of Vance Capital gleamed like a monolith of glass and steel against the midday sun. Two years ago, I had been the invisible wife, a name on a fraudulent document, a ghost haunting the margins of a corrupt empire. Today, my name was etched in heavy brushed brass beside the executive suites on the fiftieth floor: Clare Sterling, Chief Executive Officer.

The transition had not been a quiet coup; it was an absolute restructuring.
Arthur Vance sat across from me in my new, expansive office, sipping black coffee as we reviewed the morning’s market briefs. The gray at his temples seemed more pronounced, but there was a palpable lightness in his posture. He had traded the crushing weight of a compromised legacy for the peace of a chairman emeritus.
“The board is fully on board with the restructuring of the R&D compliance division,” Arthur noted, sliding a digital tablet across the mahogany desk. “No more offshore loopholes. No more blind trust accounts. Everything is transparent.”
“Good,” I said, signing a final stack of acquisition papers with a steady hand. “Because the market is watching us very closely. Every competitor wants to see if the company will implode under new management.”
“They won't,” Arthur said with a faint smile. “They’re forgetting who broke the mold to get here.”
Before I could answer, the frosted glass door swung open. Damian strode in, looking impeccably sharp in a midnight-blue suit, holding a secured tablet of his own. He didn't bother knocking—perks of being both my brother and Vance Capital’s newly retained outside general counsel.
“We have a development,” Damian announced, his expression dropping into that familiar, razor-sharp focus that used to terrify Ryan.
“What kind of development?” I asked, leaning back in my ergonomic leather chair.
“Your ex-husband’s parole hearing was moved up. And someone just paid a very heavy retainer to a high-priced appellate attorney to appeal his conviction on technicalities.”

My eyes narrowed slightly. “Who?”
“Not Eleanor,” Damian said grimly. “Vanessa Vance.”
