Chapter 14 - The Illusion of LeverageRyan leaned forward, trying to project an air of calm authority that he clearly didn't possess.

“Look, Clare, I know things ended badly,” Ryan began, his voice dropping into that smooth, persuasive cadence he used to use on corporate clients. “And I take accountability for… well, mistakes were made on both sides. But Vanessa and I have legal counsel now. The appellate court is looking closely at the coercion factors during my original plea.”
I let out a quiet, dry laugh. It was a sound so devoid of humor that it instantly silenced him.
“Coercion, Ryan?” I asked, arching an eyebrow. “You mean the part where your own embezzlement scheme blew up in your face, and your boss froze your assets because you tried to frame me as the corporate scapegoat?”
“You weaponized your brother’s firm against me while I was emotionally vulnerable!” Ryan snapped, the mask slipping for a split second, revealing the furious, insecure man underneath.
Vanessa slammed her palm against the table. “She stole everything that rightfully belonged to us, Ryan! This penthouse, the accounts, the corporate shares—it was all built on the foundation of Vance Capital, which my father built! She’s a thief hiding behind a legal loophole!”
I turned my gaze slowly toward Vanessa, studying her with clinical detachment.
“Your father didn't build Vance Capital on loopholes, Vanessa. He built it on operational integrity—something neither you nor your boyfriend here ever understood,” I said smoothly. I opened a sleek leather folder and slid two copies of a single document across the table. “Before you waste another fifteen million dollars of your grandmother’s trust on a doomed appeal, you might want to read what your high-priced defense attorney forgot to check.”
Ryan nervously picked up the paper, his eyes scanning the first paragraph. As he read further, the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh fluorescent lights.
“What… what is this?” Ryan whispered, his voice cracking.
“That is a certified notice from the federal prosecutor's office,” I said calmly. “The moment you filed your frivolous appeal, the district attorney opened a supplementary investigation into hidden offshore accounts tied to your personal social security number—accounts you forgot to disclose during the initial plea bargain.”
Vanessa snatched the paper out of his shaking hands. Her eyes widened in absolute horror as she read the bold print.

“Perjury and concealment of assets,” Vanessa breathed out, her voice trembling. “That’s… that’s another five to ten years.”
“Correct,” I said, locking eyes with Ryan. “You thought you could rattle the cage, Ryan? Every time you try to claw your way back, you just dig your grave a little deeper.”
