Chapter 4 - The Uninvited GuestBy noon, the news had reached Ryan’s social circle.

Being married to Ryan meant being part of the upper echelon of the city’s elite—people who judged your worth by the car you drove, the clubs you belonged to, and the pedigree of your family name. For two years, Ryan’s friends had looked down on me as the quiet, meek background character who was lucky to have caught a rising star like Ryan Vance.
Now, that star was burning up in the atmosphere.
Damian and I were in the penthouse living room, going over the legal documents with a senior partner from Damian’s firm, when the building’s concierge called up.
“Mr. Sterling, there is a Mr. Ryan Vance downstairs in the lobby. He’s demanding entry. He’s… well, sir, he looks like he’s lost his mind.”
“Let him up,” Damian said coolly. “Let’s see how brave he is without a wall to bounce off of.”
Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed.
The door opened to reveal a terrifying sight. Ryan looked like a man who had aged ten years overnight. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and the right side of his jaw was swollen and bruised a deep, ugly shade of purple where Damian’s fist had connected the night before.
He rushed out of the elevator, his eyes wide and bloodshot, scanning the penthouse until they landed on me sitting on the white velvet sofa with Eli sleeping peacefully in my arms.
“Clare!” Ryan cried out, stumbling forward. “Clare, thank God. You have to help me. They’ve gone completely insane!”
Damian stepped out from the kitchen holding a glass of water, casually blocking Ryan’s path. Ryan stopped short, flinching instinctively away from my brother.
“Don't take another step, Ryan,” Damian warned softly.
“Clare, please!” Ryan ignored Damian, tears welling up in his eyes as he stared at me. “You know me! You know I love you! That whole thing at the hospital… it was a mistake! Vanessa meant nothing to me! She trapped me!”
I slowly stood up, cradling Eli against my chest. I looked at the man I had loved for five years, the man who had whispered sweet promises into my ear while plotting behind my back, and felt nothing. Not anger. Not even sadness. Just a profound, liberating emptiness.
“Trapped you, Ryan?” I asked, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. “Is that what you call it when you tell another woman she’s your ‘real family’ while your wife is recovering from fourteen hours of labor?”
Ryan swallowed hard, his face turning pale. “You… you heard that?”
“Every word,” I said, walking closer to him, stopping just out of arm's reach. “Just like I heard you tell her that I was too weak to ever leave you. Just like I heard you laugh about how easy it was to control me.”
“Clare, I didn’t mean it! People say things under pressure—”
“Stop lying, Ryan. It’s pathetic,” I interrupted, my voice devoid of emotion. “You didn't come here because you love me. You came here because Arthur Vance froze your accounts, fired you from your job, and your mistress has already blocked your number.”
Ryan staggered back as if he had been slapped. His mouth opened and closed, no sound coming out.
“How… how do you know that?” he whispered.
“Because,” I said, stepping aside so Damian could hand me a thick envelope from the coffee table, “everything you built—every car, every bank account, every square inch of that downtown penthouse—was registered in my name.”
May you like
I tossed the envelope at his feet. It slid across the marble floor and stopped against his shoe.
“You wanted to hide your crimes from the IRS, Ryan, so you made me your legal scapegoat,” I continued, looking down at him with absolute calm. “Which means legally, you don’t own a single dime. And if I sign these papers right now, Arthur Vance won't be the only one pressing criminal charges.”
