Chapter 8 - The Clean SlateBy the end of the week, the legal proceedings were finalized.

Ryan Vance formally pleaded guilty to wire fraud and corporate embezzlement, accepting a plea deal negotiated by Damian’s firm that ensured a prison sentence without a prolonged trial. Vanessa Vance was permanently ousted from corporate leadership, her reputation in tatters.
As for me, my legal team had successfully transferred all of Ryan’s seized assets into a newly established trust fund exclusively for Eli’s future education and welfare. The toxic reminders of my marriage—the downtown apartment, the luxury cars, the suffocating reminders of a life built on lies—were sold off, and the proceeds were donated to a women’s shelter that specialized in helping victims of financial abuse.
Damian and I stood on the private balcony of the penthouse, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the city sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet.
Eli was sleeping soundly in his stroller, breathing softly against the cool evening breeze.
“Are you going to stay in the city?” Damian asked, handing me a glass of sparkling cider.
“No,” I said, taking a sip and smiling. “I’m taking Eli and moving back to the coast, near the old family house. I want him to grow up around people who actually know how to love without conditions.”
Damian smiled warmly, wrapping a protective arm around my shoulders. “Good. And if any man ever tries to make you feel small again—”

“I know,” I laughed softly, leaning my head against his shoulder. “I’ll call my brother.”
The thought of Ryan faded away like mist in the morning sun. He was a chapter in my past—a harsh, painful lesson in underestimating the quiet strength of a woman pushed too far.
