Chapter 15 - The Breaking PointRyan looked like a man standing on the edge of a collapsing cliff. The expensive suit, the styled hair, the illusion of a comeback—it all melted away under the crushing weight of reality.

“Clare… please,” Ryan choked out, his voice breaking as tears welled up in his eyes. He started to stand up, reaching across the table as if to grab my hand, but stopped instantly when Damian stepped out from the shadows near the doorway, resting his hand casually on his jacket pocket.
“Don't touch her,” Damian warned, his voice a low, lethal rumble.
Ryan slumped back into his chair, sobbing softly into his hands. The arrogant corporate climber was entirely gone.
Vanessa stared at him in utter disgust. The glamorous facade she had maintained shattered into a million pieces. She realized, with blinding clarity, that backing Ryan Vance wasn't a power play—it was a financial and social suicide mission.
“You’re pathetic,” Vanessa hissed at Ryan, shoving her chair back so hard it screeched against the hardwood floor. She grabbed her designer coat and glared across the table at me. “This isn't over, Clare. You haven't won.”
“I already won, Vanessa the day I walked out of that hospital room,” I replied evenly. “You’re just too blind to see that you’re fighting over scraps in a graveyard.”
Without another word, Vanessa grabbed her bag and stormed out of the conference room, the heavy glass door slamming shut behind her with a definitive, echoing crash.
Ryan sat alone at the opposite end of the long oak table, a broken man in an expensive suit, staring down at his hands as the reality of his choices finally settled into his bones.
I stood up, buttoned my blazer, and gathered my files.

“Good luck with your appeal, Ryan,” I said softly, walking toward the exit.
I didn't look back as I walked out of the room, leaving the ghosts of my past exactly where they belonged—behind me.
