Chapter 2 - The House of GlassWe didn’t go to a hotel. We went to Damian’s penthouse overlooking the financial district—a fortress of glass, steel, and absolute security.

For the first time since I met Ryan five years ago, I didn’t have to look over my shoulder.
Damian had already set up the guest suite into a makeshift nursery. A bassinet sat beside a plush armchair, and a stack of newborn essentials—diapers, organic cotton onesies, and bottles—sat neatly on a side table. It was as if my brother had known I was coming long before I picked up the phone.
“He called you?” I asked softly, sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed while Eli nursed quietly.
Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the glittering skyline of the city. He turned around, holding a cup of steaming chamomile tea, and handed it to me.
“I never stopped watching, Clare,” Damian said quietly, pulling up a chair and sitting across from me. “When you married him, I told you my door was always open. But Ryan made sure you thought walking through it meant admitting failure. He isolated you. He moved you to this sterile glass cage across town, changed your phone number, and convinced you that your family was too ‘chaotic’ for your new life.”
I looked down at the tea, feeling a hot prickle of tears behind my eyelids. “I thought I was being a good wife. I thought compromise meant letting go of the noise.”
“Compromise is two-way, Clare. What Ryan did was an erasure,” Damian said, his jaw tightening. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “And tonight, he sealed his own fate. Did you know what he was doing while you were in labor?”
My blood ran cold. I shook my head slowly.
“While you were pushing our son into the world, fighting for your life and his, Ryan was in the hospital hallway on the phone with Vanessa Vance,” Damian said, dropping the bomb with surgical precision.
My breath caught. “Vanessa? His senior partner’s daughter?”
“No. His mistress of eighteen months,” Damian corrected me coldly. “And worse than that—she’s the primary shareholder of Vance Capital, the firm Ryan has been embezzling from to fund his lifestyle and his downtown pied-à-terre.”
The room seemed to spin. The man I had married—the man I thought was just a selfish, cheating cad—was tied up in financial crimes that went far deeper than a broken marital vow.
“Embezzling?” I whispered.
“Millions,” Damian replied, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corner of his mouth. “And guess whose name is on the LLC that owns the apartment, the luxury cars, and the secret bank accounts?”
May you like
I stared at him in horror. “Mine.”
“He put everything in your name to hide it from the IRS and Vance Capital,” Damian said, standing up and walking to the door. “Which means, little sister, Ryan didn’t just lose his wife tonight. He handed you the keys to destroy him completely.”
