Chapter 3 - The Morning After the StormBy 8:00 AM the next morning, the digital world outside our fortress was already starting to burn.

My phone—which I had left on silent—was vibrating incessantly on the nightstand. When I finally picked it up, the screen was flooded with missed calls and panic-stricken text messages from Ryan.

“Clare, please pick up.” “Where are you? This isn't funny.” “Vanessa is freaking out. The company auditors are here.” “Clare, please, we need to talk about the accounts. Those papers in the bedroom—you can’t touch them.”

I watched the notifications pop up one by one, feeling a strange, hollow sort of peace. The man who used to make me feel small, incompetent, and dependent was now begging for mercy from a woman he thought he had successfully caged.

Damian walked into the room carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thick manila folder.

“Sleeping beauty is awake, I see,” Damian remarked, glancing at my phone screen. “Let him sweat. Panic is the best catalyst for a confession.”

“What’s in the folder?” I asked, gently rocking Eli, who was fast asleep against my shoulder.

“Everything we need to dismantle Ryan’s entire existence,” Damian said, tossing the folder onto the bed. “I had my forensic accounting team pull the records overnight. Ryan has been systematically draining Vance Capital’s research and development funds, channeling them through a shell company called ‘Meridian Holdings,’ and then washing them through your personal checking account.”

I gasped, looking at the bank statements. “I didn't sign those transfers!”

“He forged your signature using your old college tax returns. He thought you’d never check because he handled all the finances,” Damian explained, pulling up a digital tablet. “The problem for Ryan is that Vanessa Vance found out about you and the baby this morning. Her father, the CEO, doesn't play games. They’ve already frozen all of Ryan’s corporate cards and locked him out of his office.”

As if on cue, my phone rang again. This time, it wasn't Ryan.

It was an unknown, restricted number.

I looked at Damian. He nodded and gestured for me to put it on speakerphone.

I swiped to answer.

“Mrs. Vance?” a sharp, trembling voice asked. It wasn't Ryan. It was an older, refined man—Arthur Vance, CEO of Vance Capital.

“This is Clare,” I answered calmly.

“Mrs. Vance—Clare—I am calling to offer my deepest apologies for what my daughter and your husband have put you through,” Arthur Vance said, his voice tight with suppressed rage. “More importantly, I want to inform you that our legal team has uncovered massive financial irregularities tied directly to your husband. However, our compliance officers noticed something fascinating during the review.”

“What is that, Mr. Vance?”

“Every single asset Ryan acquired through the embezzlement scheme—including his downtown penthouse, his luxury vehicles, and his offshore accounts—is legally registered under your sole name as corporate trustee of Meridian Holdings,” Vance said, pausing for effect. “Legally speaking, Ryan gave you everything. And right now, he is legally bankrupt, jobless, and facing federal wire fraud charges.”

I looked up at Damian. My brother smiled—a slow, predatory grin of pure satisfaction.

“Thank you for letting me know, Mr. Vance,” I said smoothly. “Have your legal team contact my brother, Damian Sterling. I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to help you recover what’s yours.”
