The ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming wildflowers across the wooden deck of our home. Eli was three now, running across the lawn with a red rubber ball, his infectious laughter echoing against the cliffs.
Damian sat across from me on the porch, sipping a cup of coffee while reviewing a stack of architectural blueprints.
“Are you sure you want to expand the foundation’s headquarters out here?” Damian asked, pointing to a draft of a new community center designed specifically to support single mothers and victims of financial abuse.
“I’m positive,” I said, smiling as I watched Eli chase a butterfly across the grass. “The city is great for business, Damian. But my roots are here. This is where I learned that no matter how small someone tries to make you feel, your strength is entirely your own.”
Damian smiled warmly, lowering the blueprints and raising his coffee mug in a silent toast. “To quiet strength.”
“To knowing your worth,” I replied, clinking my mug against his.
My phone buzzed gently on the wooden table beside my chair. I glanced down at the screen. It wasn't a legal summons, a crisis report, or a reminder from the board.
It was a simple text message from Arthur Vance: “Annual shareholder meeting went flawlessly, Madam CEO. Enjoy your weekend.”
