At 2:00 AM, equipped with tactical flashlights, heavy-duty respirators, and Marcus’s security team, we descended into the subterranean maze beneath the financial district. The air was thick with the smell of damp concrete, rust, and decades of stagnant history. According to the structural blueprints buried deep in pre-merger city permits, a subterranean sub-basement connected the old municipal records office directly to the sub-foundations of Doyle Meridian.
Our boots crunched on gravel as we navigated the rusted iron pipes, the distant rumble of the subway trains vibrating through the damp walls like a subterranean heartbeat.
