Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Table

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Doyle Meridian Towers smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and unadulterated panic. When I walked through the double doors at precisely 8:58 AM, wearing a sharp, tailored midnight-blue pantsuit that completely concealed the bandages on my ribs, the twelve members of the board of directors stopped talking mid-sentence.

Karen Doyle’s empty leather chair sat at the head of the table like a vacant throne. Behind me walked Dante Romano, acting not as my protector, but as my primary financial advisor, flanked by two federal prosecutors holding thick folders of asset forfeiture warrants.

"Good morning, everyone," I said, my voice carrying clear, resonant, and entirely steady across the massive marble-inlaid table. I didn't wait to be invited; I walked straight to the head of the table, placed my leather portfolio down with a sharp thud, and sat down in Karen's empty chair.

Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner and Karen’s long-time co-conspirator, cleared his throat nervously, shifting his weight in his chair. "Ms. Doyle—ah, Madison. This is highly irregular. Under emergency corporate bylaws, a special committee must be formed to address the... unfortunate absence of Ms. Karen Doyle."

"There is no emergency committee, Arthur," I interrupted smoothly, opening my portfolio and sliding a certified federal document across the mahogany toward him. "That is a freeze order on all corporate assets tied to Karen Doyle and her associates, signed by federal judge Marcus Vance an hour ago. Furthermore, pursuant to Article 4, Section 2 of the original 1995 incorporation charter—which your illegal audit suppression failed to destroy—controlling interest of Doyle Meridian reverts unconditionally to the primary lineal descendant of Elena Doyle."

Arthur snatched the paper, his hands trembling violently as his eyes scanned the legal jargon. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in an expensive suit. The other board members began murmuring anxiously, realizing in real-time that the corporate shield they had relied on for fifteen years had just been shattered into dust.

"You can't do this," another board member protested weakly, a man named Sterling who had rubber-stamped every illegal acquisition Karen had ever pushed through. "You're a junior analyst! You have no executive experience!"

"I have something much better than executive experience," I said, leaning forward and resting my forearms on the table, my eyes locking onto every single person in the room. "I have the complete financial history of every crime this board has committed since my mother's death. Every diverted asset, every falsified audit, every offshore bribe. You have two choices today: resign immediately, forfeit your golden parachutes, and cooperate with the federal investigation, or join Karen and Stephen in federal custody before noon."

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the city far below through the triple-paned reinforced glass. No one moved. No one spoke. They all knew the game was over.
