Chapter 24 - Crossfire in Mayfair

"Madison! Get away from the window!" Marcus’s voice roared through the internal comms channel, instantly followed by the sharp, concussive crack of silenced gunfire echoing up the stairwell.
I grabbed my laptop, shoved the tablet into my coat pocket, and drew the compact sidearm Dante had insisted I carry since our night in the steam tunnels. The heavy oak door of the study exploded inward as two masked operatives in tactical gear breached the room.
I didn't hesitate. I fired twice into the floorboards near their boots, buying myself a crucial split-second to dive behind the heavy mahogany desk as return fire chewed through the wood and shattered the glass inkwells above my head.

Marcus rounded the corner of the hallway a second later, his submachine gun barking in rapid succession as he neutralized both intruders with surgical efficiency. He grabbed my arm, yanking me toward the private service stairwell at the back of the house.
"The safehouse is compromised!" Marcus yelled over the roar of incoming sirens outside. "We have to move to the extraction point now! Boss is already on his way back!"
