Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

The video call disconnected with a sharp digital beep, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt suffocating. Dante didn’t panic; his face hardened into an expression of cold, calculated fury. He walked over to the desk, his eyes scanning the blank screen where Stephen’s face had just been. Without a word, Marcus stepped into the room, tapping a tablet against his palm.
"We traced the ping," Marcus said, his voice clipped and efficient. "It’s coming from your primary residence on Elm Street, Boss. But there’s a secondary signal bouncing off a server farm owned by Vanguard Holdings—Karen Doyle’s husband's firm."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. Stephen wasn't just an abusive, controlling husband; he was an operative woven directly into the corporate machinery of Doyle Meridian. His sudden interest in me five years ago, our whirlwind romance, his insistence that I take a position at the firm under Karen's direct supervision—none of it had been an accident. I had walked into a trap the day I said I do, guided by invisible strings pulled by people who needed my name, my credentials, and my bloodline to secure an empire built on fraud.
"They're working together," I whispered, sinking into the leather chair as the realization washed over me. "Stephen and Karen. All these years, every time I thought I was failing, every time I apologized for things I didn't do... it was all designed to keep me small, to keep me from looking into my mother's old files."
"They underestimated you," Dante said, his tone unwavering as he knelt beside the chair, bringing himself to eye level. "They thought the abuse would break your spirit completely. But you didn't break, Madison. You wrote a financial report that saved Doyle Meridian millions because your instincts are sharper than theirs combined. They are terrified of what you'll find when you look at the real numbers."
"We need to go back," I said, adrenaline overriding the searing pain in my ribs. "If Stephen has the documents from the safe, he’ll destroy them before morning. That’s the proof of what they did to my mother."
"We don't go back empty-handed," Dante replied, standing up and reaching for his jacket. "We go back with a subpoena, a federal forensic team, and enough leverage to tear Doyle Meridian down to its foundation. But first, we need to unlock the second part of your memory. The part they stole from you using chemical coercion."

Chemical coercion. The phrase hit me like a physical blow. The missing two hours from the night before, the blood at the corner of my mouth, the message SHE REMEMBERS NOTHING—it wasn't just a concussion. Someone had drugged me in my own kitchen. Stephen hadn't just pushed me; he had administered a retrograde amnesia agent to erase whatever I had stumbled upon in his study while he was working late.
"The clinic," Dante continued, reading my thoughts. "Dr. Vance’s associate runs an independent toxicology lab that doesn't report to corporate insurance networks. Marcus has already arranged transport. We find out what they put in your system, and then we pay Stephen a visit on our terms."
