Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE REARVIEWThe grease-stained window of the alleyway behind Il Giardino Segreto felt like a lifetime away as Sophie’s worn sneakers slapped frantically against the wet asphalt of 4th Street. Her lungs burned with the raw, freezing air of February, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the cold terror gripping her spine.

She had done it. After eight months of living in the absolute margins—sleeping in vacant boiler rooms, dumpster-diving behind organic bakeries, erasing her name, her face, and her very existence—she had just thrown it all away for a French bulldog.

You’re an idiot, she screamed at herself internally, turning hard down a narrow, unlit corridor. A brilliant, suicidal idiot.

She could still feel the phantom sensation of the puppy's tiny, frantic chest under her fingers. She could still see the dark, bottomless mine shafts of Alessandro Conti’s eyes. He wasn't just any mob boss; he was the head of the Conti Syndicate, a man whose shadow stretched from the shipping ports of the East Coast all the time to the high-stakes underground syndicates of Palermo. And worst of all? He now knew her face.

A low, deep-throated rumble cut through the quiet night air.

Sophie froze, pressing her slight frame flat against the damp brick wall of a textile warehouse. A sleek, matte-black Mercedes-Maybach glided past the mouth of the alley, moving with an eerie, predatory slowness. Its headlights swept across the brickwork, painting the shadows in stark white before fading into the dark.

It didn't stop. But as it crept forward, Sophie caught a glimpse of the backseat through the lightly tinted window.

Alessandro Conti sat in the center of the leather seat. The rescued puppy was curled up securely in his lap, resting its small tan head against his tailored waistcoat. Alessandro wasn't looking out the window at the passing city. He was staring straight ahead, his fingers gently, methodically stroking the dog's fur.

And then, his head turned. His dark eyes flicked toward the alleyway, locking onto the exact spot where she was hiding.

Sophie held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The car didn't speed up. It didn't slow down. It just moved past into the night, leaving behind a wake of exhaust and a terrifying certainty: He was looking for her. And in a city owned by the Conti family, you could run, but you could never truly disappear once Alessandro Conti set his mind on finding you.
