Chapter 8 - THE BAIT IN THE LION'S DENTwo days later, an abandoned shipping warehouse at Pier 43 stood shrouded in the thick, rolling fog of a freezing midnight.

According to the meticulously planned operation coordinated between Alessandro Conti’s inner circle and federal agents operating off-the-books, this was where Don Moretti’s primary financial courier was scheduled to transfer offshore accounts to international shell companies.

And Sophie Chen was the centerpiece of the trap.

Sitting inside the back of an unmarked surveillance van parked three blocks away, Sophie stared at the laptop screen displaying live thermal feeds of the warehouse. She wore a heavy tactical vest over her black clothing, a hidden federal wire taped securely against her collarbone.

Through the encrypted audio feed in her ear, she could hear Alessandro’s voice, calm and commanding, monitoring the perimeter from a command vehicle fifty yards away.

"Remember the protocol, Sophie," Alessandro’s voice whispered in her ear. "Walk in, hand over the decrypted drive containing the fake ledger, and walk out. My men will secure the perimeter the moment Moretti's enforcers show their hands. You won't be touched."

"I know," Sophie whispered back, her fingers trembling slightly as she checked the digital recorder hidden in her palm. "Just... don't be late."

"I've never been late in my life, Dr. Chen."

She took a deep, steadying breath, pushed open the heavy back doors of the van, and stepped out into the biting coastal wind.

The walk toward Pier 43 felt like walking toward an executioner's block. The cavernous warehouse loomed ahead like a rusted skeletal beast rising out of the fog. Dim yellow security lights flickered overhead, casting long, grotesque shadows across stacks of shipping containers and rusted industrial cranes.

She pushed open the side metal door of the warehouse. The interior was echoing and vast, smelling of saltwater, diesel fuel, and damp concrete.

"I know you're here," Sophie called out, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "I have the drive. Everything Moretti wants."

From the shadows between two towering stacks of shipping containers, a slow, mocking clap echoed through the quiet space.

Step by heavy step, a tall, impeccably dressed older man with silver hair and a cold, predatory smile emerged from the dark. Behind him stepped four armed enforcers, their weapons raised and leveled directly at her chest.

Don Moretti.

"Well, well, well," Moretti purred, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "The little ghost surgeon who wouldn't stay dead. We thought you were buried in a shallow grave six months ago alongside your dear mentor."

Sophie kept her hands visible, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer, but her voice remained shockingly steady. "You killed Dr. Okonkwo for treating a dog. You killed innocent people to protect your empire. It ends tonight, Moretti."

Moretti let out a harsh, barking laugh, signaling his men to close in. "End? My dear child, nothing ends until I say it does. Hand over the drive, and maybe—just maybe—we'll make your death quick."

May you like

Sophie reached slowly into her pocket, her fingers wrapping around the small flash drive.

Now, she thought. Please, Alessandro, now.
