Chapter 6 - THE SIEGE OF THE CLIFFSIDE ESTATEThe sleek, minimalist serenity of the Conti estate shattered in an instant.

Red emergency strobe lights began flashing along the polished corridors, casting an eerie, arterial glow across the expensive artwork and glass walls. Sirens wailed a low, rhythmic warning.

In the medical suite, Sophie froze as the distant, hollow pop-pop-pop of silenced automatic gunfire echoed from the main entrance hall upstairs.

"Stay here," Alessandro commanded, his voice hardening instantly into that of a syndicate warlord. He pulled a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol from a concealed holster beneath his arm, checking the magazine with practiced smoothness.

"Wait—Alessandro!" Sophie called out, stepping forward. "There are multiple entry points. If they bypassed the perimeter, they're using thermal EMPs. They know the layout of the house!"

Alessandro stopped at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder. A grim, dangerous smirk touched his lips. "Let them come in. This house was built to be a fortress, Sophie. Not a home."

He slammed the heavy steel security door shut, locking it automatically from the outside.

Inside the medical suite, Sophie’s heart raced. She wasn't going to sit around like a trapped animal while a war was fought over her head. She turned to the supply cabinets, her medical training instantly pivoting to tactical survival. She grabbed a heavy aluminum trauma case, stuffing it with sterile gauze, scalpel blades, heavy suture kits, and a bottle of high-grade antiseptic.

Through the secure intercom monitor, she listened to the chaos unfolding upstairs. The sound of shattered glass, shouting voices, and heavy footsteps filled the audio feed.

“West wing hallway is breached!” a guard’s voice yelled before cutting off in a burst of static.

Suddenly, the lights in the underground medical suite flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness save for the pulsing red emergency battery strips along the floor.

Click.

The keypad beside the hidden service elevator in the corner of the room beeped. Green light flashed.

Someone was overriding the elevator from the upper residential floors.

Sophie backed away, her hand closing around a heavy metal oxygen wrench sitting on the counter. Her breathing was shallow, controlled. She positioned herself behind the heavy concrete pillar near the surgical bay, waiting in the absolute shadows.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft ping.

Two men in tactical black gear, their faces obscured by night-vision goggles and ballistic balaclavas, stepped out into the dim red glow of the medical suite. They held submachine guns raised, sweeping the room with lethal efficiency.

"Clear," one muttered into his shoulder mic. "Target is—"

He didn't get to finish the sentence.

From the shadows, Sophie lunged forward with the fury of a cornered animal, bringing the heavy metal wrench down with all her weight across the back of the first operative's helmet. He collapsed instantly like a felled tree.

The second operative spun around instantly, his weapon tracking toward her. Sophie didn't hesitate; she kicked the rolling surgical tray directly into his shins, sending him stumbling backward. Before he could recover, she closed the distance, driving her knee upward with precise anatomical force.

The man hit the floor, gasping for air, and went limp.

Sophie stood over them, chest heaving, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she dropped the heavy wrench. She had just taken down two elite syndicate hitmen.

The intercom crackled back to life. But it wasn't a guard's voice. It was Alessandro.

"Sophie. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she breathed into the console, her voice trembling. "Two intruders in the medical suite. Down."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the heavy sound of gunfire echoing in the background.

"Good girl," Alessandro’s voice came back, lower and rougher this time. "Stay put. I'm coming down."
