Chapter 7 - THE SCARS WE CARRYThe smoke had barely cleared from the upper corridors when Alessandro walked into the underground medical suite, his suit jacket ruined by a graze of powder burn on the shoulder, his hands stained with blood that wasn't his.

He stepped over the unconscious operatives on the floor without a second glance, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Sophie, who was sitting on the edge of a stainless-steel examination table, wrapping a gauze bandage around a minor scrape on her forearm.
"You handled yourself well," Alessandro said, walking up to her. He reached out, gently checking the bandage she had just applied. "Too well. Where did a brilliant medical student learn close-quarters defense?"
Sophie looked up at him, her eyes reflecting the harsh red glow of the emergency lights. "My father was a military surgeon stationed overseas. Before he died, he taught me that in hostile environments, a scalpel isn't just a tool for healing—it's the only thing standing between you and the grave."
Alessandro’s expression softened momentarily, a rare flicker of raw human empathy breaking through his impenetrable armor. He sat down on the stool next to her, resting his elbows on his knees.
"We caught three of Moretti’s men upstairs," Alessandro said quietly. "The rest retreated when they realized my security detail had them outflanked. But it proves one thing, Sophie: as long as you're hiding in the shadows of this city, Moretti will hunt you. And eventually, he might succeed."
Sophie stared down at her hands. The adrenaline was finally fading, leaving behind a crushing wave of exhaustion and despair. "Then what do I do? Run again? Live in dumpsters until my luck runs out?"
"No," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality. "You stop running. We end this."
"End it? How?" Sophie looked at him in disbelief. "Don Moretti controls half the police department and an army of killers!"
"Don Moretti controls a criminal empire built on fear and silence," Alessandro replied, standing up and towering over her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, placing it gently on the metal table between them. "And this... is everything the Conti Syndicate has gathered on Moretti’s illegal operations for the past decade. Financial records, shell corporations, and proof of the hit on Dr. Okonkwo."
Sophie stared at the flash drive as if it were a live grenade. "Why are you giving this to me?"
"Because," Alessandro said, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from him, "you are the only witness who can legally and medically verify the execution style of Okonkwo’s murder. With this evidence, and your testimony under federal protection, Moretti goes away forever."

Sophie looked up, her heart pounding. "Federal protection? Since when does a mob boss work with the feds?"
"Since a rival syndicate threatened the only thing Alessandro Conti ever truly cared about," he replied softly, his hand moving slowly to brush a stray lock of dark hair away from her face. His touch was surprisingly gentle. "And since that same person saved my dog, and nearly died doing it."
