Chapter 10 - THE SCARS WE HEALThree months later, the sun was shining brightly over the rolling cliffs north of the city, warming the polished glass and concrete of the Conti estate.

Inside the newly expanded, state-of-the-art private medical clinic occupying the East Wing, Dr. Sophie Chen stood in a crisp white lab coat, organizing surgical instruments on a sterilized tray. The lingering shadows of her past—the freezing alleys, the terror of Okonkwo’s murder, the constant running—were now distant memories, replaced by purpose, safety, and a quiet, undeniable strength.
A tiny, energetic ball of tan fur raced across the polished linoleum, skidding to a halt near her sneakers and letting out a sharp, joyful bark.
Sophie smiled, kneeling down to pick up the French bulldog. "Hey there, Coco. Are you supervising my rounds again?"
The puppy gave her face an enthusiastic lick, its tail wagging furiously.
The heavy glass door of the clinic swung open softly. Alessandro walked in, wearing an open-collared linen shirt, looking more like a powerful CEO than a syndicate boss. He leaned against the doorframe, watching her with a warm, unmistakable smile that only she ever got to see.
"The federal prosecutor's office just called," Alessandro said, his deep voice rich with satisfaction. "Moretti’s trial concluded an hour ago. Three consecutive life sentences without parole. The syndicate remnants have folded, and your name has officially been expunged from every fugitive database in the country."
Sophie stood up, holding Coco in her arms, and looked at the man who had pulled her out of the dark.
"So," she said softly, a playful spark dancing in her eyes. "Does this mean I'm officially off the payroll, or am I stuck being personal veterinarian and trauma surgeon to a mob boss forever?"
Alessandro walked across the room, stopping just inches away from her. He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the edge of her collar, right where the old fear used to live.
"You're free to go anywhere you want, Sophie," Alessandro whispered, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute devotion. "The entire world is open to you."
May you like
Sophie smiled, leaning slightly into his touch.
"Good thing," she whispered back, "because I don't think Coco and I are going anywhere."
