Chapter 4 - THE PALACE OF GLASS AND STEELThe ride in the back of the Maybach was suffocatingly silent. Sophie sat as far away from Alessandro as the expansive leather interior allowed, her hands clenched tightly in the pockets of her oversized hoodie.

They didn't drive to a warehouse or a dockside hideout. Instead, the car swept through the iron security gates of a sprawling modernist estate perched on the cliffs overlooking the churning grey ocean north of the city. The main house was a masterpiece of glass, steel, and minimalist concrete—a fortress disguised as a billionaire's architectural showcase.

Inside, the foyer was cavernous, dominated by a towering abstract sculpture and floors of polished black marble that reflected the recessed lighting.

"Take her to the East Wing," Alessandro instructed a stern-faced woman in a neat grey dress. "Give her hot water, clean clothes, and a proper meal. Then bring her to my study."

"Mr. Conti, I'm not a prisoner," Sophie protested, though her voice lacked conviction as her stomach audibly rumbled in the quiet foyer.

Alessandro paused on the grand staircase, looking back over his shoulder with a faint, ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "If you were a prisoner, Dr. Chen, you wouldn't be breathing the air in this house. Consider yourself a very heavily guarded guest."

An hour later, stripped of her filthy layers and dressed in soft, cashmere loungewear provided by the household staff, Sophie sat in a leather armchair across a massive mahogany desk.

The study was lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with rare volumes, leather-bound ledgers, and tactical maps. On the corner of the desk sat a small, heated pet bed where Coco was sleeping soundly, completely recovered from his near-death experience.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Alessandro walked in, having shed his overcoat. He poured two glasses of amber liquid from a crystal decanter on the sideboard and placed one on the desk in front of her.

"Drink. It's scotch. It helps with the shock."

Sophie didn't touch the glass. She looked up at him, her eyes defensive. "Why am I here, Mr. Conti? If you wanted to silence me because of what I know about the underworld, you could have done it in the alley."

"Silence you?" Alessandro let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. He took a seat behind the desk, resting his chin on his intertwined fingers. "Sophie. I don't kill people who save my dog. I reward them. But more importantly... I have a proposition for you."

Sophie narrowed her eyes. "I'm a doctor, not a criminal."

"Correction," Alessandro leaned forward, his dark gaze piercing. "You're a brilliant, hunted fugitive with nowhere to run, and the men who murdered your mentor are still looking for the loose ends. Including you."

Sophie flinched as if struck.

"The men who killed Okonkwo didn't act on their own," Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "They belong to a rival faction—the Moretti Syndicate. They want absolute control of the city's medical black market. And they know you saw something that night."

He slid a manila folder across the desk. It popped open slightly to reveal surveillance photographs, financial wire transfers, and a dossier bearing a red stamp.

"They think you're dead," Alessandro said. "And I can keep it that way. But in exchange... I need a private physician. Someone I can trust implicitly. Someone who can perform miracles when public hospitals aren't an option."

Sophie stared at the folder, then up at the dangerous, magnetic man sitting across from her. Her old life was gone. Running was a slow death.

"And if I say no?" she asked quietly.

Alessandro smiled—a slow, terrifyingly confident curve of his lips. "You won't."
