Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE OF A GHOSTBack in her sanctuary—an abandoned, half-demolished dental clinic on the industrial outskirts of the city—Sophie collapsed onto a pile of discarded insulation foam. The room smelled of mold, copper, and damp concrete, but to her, it was a castle.

She pulled her knees to her chest, trembling violently not from the cold, but from the sudden rush of adrenaline leaving her system.

Eight months ago, she hadn't just run away; she had escaped an execution. As a senior medical resident under the brilliant but ethically flexible Dr. James Okonkwo, Sophie had been groomed for greatness. Dr. Okonkwo didn't just teach standard trauma surgery; he ran a clandestine underground clinic for powerful figures who couldn't risk going to public hospitals—warlords, politicians, and yes, syndicate bosses.

One rainy night, Dr. Okonkwo made the fatal mistake of saving the wrong life—or rather, failing to keep it a secret. Sophie had been hiding in the supply closet when the masked men entered the clinic. She heard the silenced shots. She watched through the louvered door as Dr. Okonkwo slumped against the sterilized counter, life leaking out of him onto the linoleum.

They hadn't seen her escape through the ceiling ventilation shaft. But she knew the rule of the underworld: loose ends are trimmed.

And now, she had just walked right into the lion's den, demonstrated world-class pediatric and anatomical precision on a mobster's pet, and shouted medical terminology in a room full of killers.

Her phone—a burner she only turned on once a week to check local news feeds—suddenly vibrated against the cold concrete beside her.

She picked it up cautiously. The screen lit up with a local news alert from the City Herald:

BREAKING: UNIDENTIFIED MYSTERY WOMAN SAVES PRIZED PET AT EXCLUSIVE DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT; CONTI SYNDICATE OFFERS REWARD FOR INFORMATION.

Sophie's breath hitched as she tapped the notification. There was no photo of her face—she had kept her head down, hair falling like a curtain across her cheeks—but the description was chillingly accurate: Skeletal frame, dark matted hair, wearing a filthy gray hoodie, displaying advanced emergency medical proficiency.

Sophie stared at the glowing screen until the battery flickered and died, plunging her back into the dark. She was no longer just a runaway student hiding in the shadows. She was the most wanted person in the city.
