Chapter 10 - The Sealed Room Opened

Six months later, the spring sun was once again warming the sprawling pastures of Cedar Hollow, turning the rolling Georgia hills into a vibrant sea of emerald green.

The media vans were long gone. The federal trial against Vivian Vance had concluded with a swift guilty verdict and a twenty-year sentence for corporate fraud and embezzlement. Brooks Logistics was stronger than ever, but Elijah had finally learned the art of delegating, spending his weekends where he actually belonged.

Inside the main house, the heavy walnut door at the end of the upstairs hall was no longer locked. In fact, it was wide open.

Sunlight poured through the tall windows of the nursery, illuminating the handcrafted maple crib. But the crib no longer sat empty.

Zoe, now eleven months old and taking her very first wobbly steps across the plush rug, giggled as she chased a rolling wooden toy across the floor.

Imani stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a warm, content smile, watching her daughter explore.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a familiar, solid chest. Elijah rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and lavender in her hair.

“You know,” Elijah murmured softly, his lips brushing against her ear, “when you said those five words in the storm eighteen months ago, I thought you were just another interruption.”

Imani turned slightly within his embrace, tilting her head up to look into his eyes, a playful spark dancing in her own.

“And what do you think now, Mr. Brooks?”

Elijah smiled, his hand sliding down to interlock his fingers securely with hers as they watched Zoe pull herself up by the edge of the crib, babbling happily to the sunlight.
