Chapter 16 - The Proposal Under the Stars

By November, the crisp autumn winds had stripped the oak trees bare, leaving stark, elegant silhouettes against the vast Georgia sky.
It was a Saturday evening, and Eleanor had taken Zoe down to her cottage for a sleepover, leaving Cedar Hollow quiet, peaceful, and entirely theirs for the night.
Elijah had prepared dinner—simple grilled steak and roasted vegetables, cooked entirely by his own hands. After dinner, he led Imani out onto the wide stone patio behind the house, wrapping a heavy cashmere blanket around her shoulders as they sat side-by-side on a wooden bench overlooking the moonlit pastures.
“Leo is doing well at the stables,” Imani noted, leaning her head against Elijah’s shoulder. “The head manager says he’s the hardest-working kid they’ve hired in years.”
“People just need a second chance sometimes,” Elijah murmured, staring out into the dark horizon. “I used to think keeping everyone out was the only way to stay safe. I thought wealth and walls could protect me from grief.”
He turned slightly on the bench, shifting to face her directly. In the pale silver glow of the moonlight, his dark eyes shone with a profound, unshakeable intensity.
“Elijah?” Imani whispered, her breath catching in her throat as she saw the expression on his face.
Elijah reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee—the stone patio was cold, and he wanted her close. Instead, he opened the box, revealing a vintage ring featuring a delicate diamond flanked by two small emeralds—the birthstone of his mother, and the exact ring his father had given to Clara years ago, resized and meticulously restored.
“I’m not offering you a cage, Imani,” Elijah said, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion. “And I’m not asking you to fill an empty room. I’m asking you to choose this life with me—fully, legally, and forever.”
Imani looked down at the ring, tears instantly blurring her vision. She thought back to eighteen months ago, standing in the pouring rain, holding her infant daughter, terrified and alone.
“Five words,” Imani choked out, a watery laugh escaping her lips. “That’s all it took.”

“Five words,” Elijah agreed, sliding the delicate ring onto her trembling finger. “And it changed my entire world. Will you marry me, Imani?”
“Yes,” she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. “Yes, Elijah. A thousand times, yes.”
