Chapter 11 - The First Step

Zoe’s first birthday arrived on a crisp morning in late September, transforming Cedar Hollow into a flurry of pastel balloons and ribbons. Imani stood by the massive kitchen island, frosting a small vanilla cake, while Eleanor hummed softly, arranging wildflowers in ceramic pitchers across the long dining table.

Elijah walked in through the back patio doors, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, smelling faintly of freshly cut grass and cedar. He stopped behind Imani, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

“You’ve been up since five,” Elijah whispered, his lips grazing the shell of her ear.

“Someone had to make sure the frosting didn't slide off,” Imani smiled, leaning back against his chest. “Besides, I want this to be special. It’s her first real birthday in a home that actually feels permanent.”

Elijah’s grip tightened imperceptibly. The word permanent still carried a sacred weight between them, a silent promise neither had rushed to force into legal contracts, though they both knew the truth. Cedar Hollow was no longer just his farm; it was theirs.

Just then, a sharp, urgent rapping echoed from the front foyer.

Elijah frowned, stepping back from Imani. Visitors were rare out on the private gravel road unless they were invited, and today’s guest list was strictly limited to Eleanor and the local pediatrician who had cleared Zoe to start walking.

He walked down the long hallway, pulling the heavy oak door open. Standing on the porch was a middle-aged man in a tailored charcoal suit, holding a worn leather briefcase and looking deeply uncomfortable.

“Elijah Brooks?” the man asked, his voice trembling slightly.

“Who’s asking?” Elijah’s eyes narrowed instantly.

“My name is Arthur Pendelton,” the man said, swallowing hard as he pulled a thick, legal-bound envelope from his briefcase. “I was Marcus Carter’s family attorney in Savannah.”

Elijah froze. Marcus Carter was Imani’s late husband.
