Chapter 15 - Mercy in the Dark

The kitchen was warm again twenty minutes later. Imani sat at the island, wrapped in a woolen cardigan, pouring a steaming mug of black coffee and placing a plate piled high with leftover roast beef sandwiches in front of Leo.
The young man ate like a starving wolf, his shoulders shaking as he chewed.
Elijah stood by the kitchen sink, his arms crossed over his chest, watching the boy with a hard, evaluating gaze.
“Breaking and entering into private property carries a heavy prison sentence, Leo,” Elijah said flatly, though the anger had completely drained from his voice. “You could have been shot.”
“I know, sir,” Leo choked out, staring down at his plate. “I’m stupid. I’m just... I’m so tired of failing.”
Imani looked at Elijah, her eyes softening with deep, profound empathy. She knew what it felt like to stand at the edge of a cliff with nowhere to fall except downward.
“Elijah,” Imani said softly, standing up and walking over to place a gentle hand on his arm. “Don't call the sheriff.”
Elijah looked down at her, sighing deeply. “Imani, he broke into our house.”
“He was hungry, and he was desperate,” she countered gently. “Your father used to tell you that you don't ask whether helping is convenient before you decide whether helping is right. Remember?”
Elijah stared at her for a long moment, the ghost of his father’s voice echoing in his mind. A slow, heavy sigh escaped his lips. He ran a hand through his dark hair, looking back at the trembling kid.
“Listen to me, Leo,” Elijah said, his voice firm but steady. “I’m not calling the police. But you’re not getting away with a free pass either.”
Leo looked up, wide-eyed. “Wh-what do you mean?”
May you like
“Tomorrow morning at six AM, you report to the main stables at Cedar Hollow,” Elijah ordered. “My head stable manager needs an extra hand mucking stalls, repairing fences, and hauling feed. The pay is twenty-two dollars an hour, full benefits, and a cot in the bunkhouse. If you show up late, or if you ever pull a stunt like this again, I personally throw you in the county jail. Do we understand each other?”
Leo stared at him in utter disbelief, fresh tears welling up in his eyes, but this time they were tears of sheer gratitude. He nodded furiously. “Yes, Mr. Brooks. I won't let you down. I swear it.”
