Chapter 14 - The Midnight Intruder

Two weeks after Arthur Pendelton’s visit, the autumn air turned sharp and biting, bringing the first frost of the year to the rolling pastures of Georgia.
It was 2:15 AM when Elijah bolted upright in his bed.
It wasn't a noise inside the house that woke him; it was the abrupt, unnatural silence of the security system’s perimeter chime. He rolled out of bed in one fluid motion, pulling a heavy Glock from his bedside safe before slipping silently out into the dark hallway.
He moved like a ghost down the stairs, his bare feet making no sound on the hardwood floors.
Near the back patio doors, the heavy glass was shattered. A dark silhouette was crouched near the kitchen counter, frantically sliding drawers open and tossing papers onto the floor.
Elijah didn't hesitate. He flicked on the overhead kitchen lights with his left hand while leveling the weapon with his right.
“Don't move an inch,” Elijah’s voice cut through the room like a razor.
The intruder gasped, freezing mid-motion before slowly turning around.
In the harsh overhead glare stood a young man in his early twenties, wearing a stained mechanic's jacket, shivering violently, and holding a silver kitchen knife like a frightened animal. It wasn't a professional assassin or an corporate spy. It was a kid who looked half-starved and utterly terrified.
“Please! Don't shoot!” the boy cried, dropping the knife onto the tile floor with a loud clatter. “I didn't mean to hurt anyone! I just needed food! I was hiding in the stables all day!”

Lowering the gun slightly, Elijah stared at the kid, recognition slowly dawning. “You’re the kid who worked at the service station in Coulter Ridge. Leo, right?”
Leo slumped against the kitchen counter, bursting into ragged tears. “They’re going to foreclose on my mom’s house, Mr. Brooks. I lost my job at the garage after the federal raid scare, and I didn't know where else to go.”
