Chapter 12 - The Attorney’s Briefcase

Elijah didn't invite Arthur Pendelton into the grand foyer; instead, he led him straight to the quiet privacy of his home office, closing the heavy mahogany door firmly behind them.
“State your business, Mr. Pendelton, and make it quick,” Elijah said, his tone dropping into a dangerous, protective register. “Imani has been through enough trauma without ghost stories from her past.”
Arthur sat down slowly in the leather armchair, setting his briefcase on his knees. “I didn't come to cause trauma, Mr. Brooks. I came because I spent the last year trying to track down Imani Carter, and it wasn't until your corporate restructuring made national news last spring that my firm finally located her address here at Cedar Hollow.”
He slid a manila folder across the mahogany desk.
Elijah didn't touch it immediately. “What is this?”
“Before Marcus Carter passed away from his aneurysm, he made a series of high-risk venture investments in a biotech startup down in Savannah,” Arthur explained, wiping sweat from his brow. “At the time, everyone thought the company was worthless. It was a long shot. But three months ago, that startup was acquired by a major pharmaceutical conglomerate for a staggering sum.”
Elijah’s dark eyes flicked up from the folder to the attorney. “How much?”

“After taxes and liquidation... the residual trust payout for Marcus’s legal next-of-kin—his wife and surviving child—amounts to just over four million dollars.”
The office fell into absolute, stunned silence.
