Chapter 18 - Shadows from the Past

By January of the following year, life at Cedar Hollow had settled into a rhythm of deep, abiding joy. The estate was filled with the sound of Zoe’s infectious laughter, the heavy rumble of tractors, and the quiet, steady hum of two people who had found their harbor after a brutal storm.
Yet, peace in a billion-dollar empire is rarely left entirely undisturbed.
It was a freezing Friday morning when Elijah’s private phone rang while he was reviewing pasture expansion logs in his study.
He picked it up briskly. “Brooks.”
“Mr. Brooks,” a tense voice spoke through the secure line. “This is Agent Miller from the Federal Transport Commission. I’m calling to give you a courtesy heads-up before it hits the evening news.”
Elijah’s posture stiffened instantly. “What is it, Miller?”
“Vivian Vance’s legal team filed an appeal this morning. During the discovery review, they uncovered an old subsidiary shell company—Brooks Global Holdings—that was registered four years ago under your late wife Clara’s name. There’s a pending civil lawsuit filed by an anonymous investor claiming that millions in undisclosed assets were funneled through that shell right before her death.”
Elijah felt a sudden, icy chill grip his chest. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

“That’s impossible,” Elijah said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. “Clara had nothing to do with corporate shell companies.”
“Maybe not willingly, Mr. Brooks,” Miller replied gravely. “But someone used her signature. And whoever filed that lawsuit is aiming directly at the foundation of your entire estate—and everything you’ve built since.”
