Chapter 17 - The Ghost of Christmas Past

December rolled in with a biting wind that swept down Fifth Avenue, painting the store windows in festive reds and golds. Exactly one year had passed since the night Clare left her wedding ring beneath the glowing Christmas tree.
To mark the anniversary, Clare and Julian walked through Central Park with Leo riding safely on Julian’s shoulders, catching snowflakes in his mittens. They stopped by a small, historic café near the park's edge—the exact spot where William Mercer had first introduced Julian and Clare to the foundational ideals of their family's true legacy.
"Are you thinking about last Christmas?" Julian asked softly, brushing a stray snowflake from Clare’s wool scarf.
"I was thinking about how close I came to staying," Clare admitted, looking out over the frozen ponds. "If that tablet hadn't lit up... if I hadn't found that wooden box... I would have spent my entire life believing I was the problem."

"You were never the problem, Clare," Julian said, his eyes filled with fierce devotion. "You were the catalyst."
She smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as the holiday lights flickered on across the skyline, illuminating a city that no longer held any terror for them.
