Chapter 6 - The AllianceBack in Woodstock, the warmth of the bookstore felt like a world away from the corporate shark tank Harrison was navigating. Clare sat across the table from Julian and Eleanor, reviewing the stack of legal documents that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Harrison’s entire empire was built on stolen property, fraud, and corporate embezzlement.

“If we file these supplementary divorce disclosures in New York concurrently with the Vermont probate injunction,” Julian explained, tapping a pen against the table, “Harrison’s corporate defense collapses from both ends. He’ll be forced to step down as CEO within forty-eight hours to avoid federal securities fraud charges.”

Clare looked down at her swollen belly. Her son gave a gentle, rhythmic kick, as if approving the plan.

“He’ll come after us,” Clare said quietly. “Harrison doesn’t lose. When he realizes he’s trapped, he becomes dangerous.”

“Let him come,” Julian replied, his voice laced with cold resolve. “For twenty years, he lived in the luxury my father’s sweat built while my mother and I hid in the shadows. This isn't just about corporate shares anymore, Clare. This is about justice.”

Eleanor reached across the table and placed her weathered hand over Clare’s. “You’re braver than you know, child. Leaving him on Christmas Eve took more courage than most people find in a lifetime.”

“I didn't leave for myself,” Clare whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “I left because I refused to let my son grow up believing that humiliation is love, or that power gives someone the right to destroy everyone around them.”

Suddenly, the front bell of the bookstore chimed. The sharp, aggressive sound shattered the quiet sanctuary.

Footsteps slammed against the wooden floorboards outside the back room—heavy, hurried, furious footsteps.

Before anyone could stand, the door swung violently open.

Harrison stood in the frame, snow melting from his wool coat, his eyes wild and fixated entirely on Clare.

“Found you,” Harrison breathed, a dangerous, victorious smirk twisting his lips.
