Chapter 8 - The Collapse of an EmpireSirens wailed in the crisp Vermont air outside, echoing off the snow-covered roofs of Woodstock. The sharp, flashing red and blue lights painted the bookstore windows in frantic strokes.

Harrison turned toward the front window, his face completely drained of color.

“You called the state police?” Harrison hissed, turning back to Clare with sheer disbelief.

“I didn't have to,” a calm voice announced from the doorway.

Two local Vermont state troopers stepped into the back room, flanked by federal marshals holding a sealed arrest warrant.

“Harrison Mercer?” the lead trooper asked, pulling out a pair of steel cuffs. “You’re being placed under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and the active investigation into the suspicious death of William Mercer.”

“This is insane!” Harrison shouted, thrashing as the marshals grabbed his arms, pinning him against the mahogany bookshelf. “You can’t touch me! I own half of Manhattan!”

“Not anymore, you don't,” Julian said quietly, watching as his brother was forced into handcuffs.

As Harrison was hauled backward toward the snowy exit, his eyes met Clare’s one last time. There was no arrogance left in them—only a terrifying, hollow realization that his entire world had crumbled because he underestimated the woman he thought he could control.

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind the officers, leaving the bookstore in a profound, heavy silence.

Clare let out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she’d been holding for six months. Her knees suddenly felt weak, and Julian was instantly there, steadying her arm and guiding her back to the armchair.

“Are you alright?” Julian asked, his eyes filled with genuine concern.

“I am,” Clare whispered, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time in years. “I think... I think I’m finally free.”
