Chapter 18 - The Appellate Verdict

Judge Miller tapped his gavel once, the sound echoing sharply through the packed courtroom. Harrison Mercer stood flanked by court-appointed defense attorneys, his orange jumpsuit hanging loosely on his frame, his hair graying prematurely at the temples.
"The court has reviewed the final motions for appeal regarding the securities fraud convictions, obstruction charges, and proxy manipulation," Judge Miller announced, his voice steady and severe. "Given the extensive paper trail, witness testimony, and verified corporate malfeasance, the appeal is summarily denied. The original sentence of twenty-two years without parole stands."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Harrison closed his eyes, his knees buckling slightly before his lawyers grabbed his elbows to steady him.
Clare watched from the front row, sitting beside Julian and Eleanor. There was no triumph in her expression, only a profound, immovable peace. The cycle of deceit, control, and fear that had defined the Mercer name for a generation was officially broken.
