Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

Spring sunlight streamed through the arched windows of the newly established William & Eleanor Mercer Foundation in downtown Manhattan. As executive director, Clare cut the ceremonial crimson ribbon alongside Julian and a room full of community leaders, shelter directors, and corporate reformers.

The foundation was dedicated to providing legal, financial, and emotional support to women escaping abusive, high-control corporate marriages—providing them with the resources Clare once desperately needed.

"When I walked out into the snow three years ago," Clare told the gathered crowd, her voice ringing clear through the microphone, "I didn't know where I was going. I only knew that my dignity was worth more than a gilded cage. Today, this foundation ensures that no woman ever has to make that walk alone."

Applause thundered through the hall. Leo, now standing proudly beside his mother, tugged at her blazer and handed her a single white rose. Clare smiled, kneeling down to hug him tightly.
