Chapter 17 - The Offer Across the TableLater that afternoon, a formal delegation of regional business partners arrived at the estate for a routine quarterly review—the first such meeting held since the purge of the old syndicate heads.

Clara sat at the right hand of Leo Castillion at the polished mahogany dining table where her journey had begun weeks ago. The twelve chairs around the table were filled with new faces—men and women chosen for their integrity, competence, and loyalty to the newly reformed Castillion Foundation.
As the meeting commenced, Antonio Rossi, the elderly patriarch who had survived the purge, tapped his cane softly against the floor to gain everyone's attention.
"Before we review the shipping manifests," Antonio announced, looking directly across the table at Clara, "the board has unanimously voted on a permanent structural amendment to the Castillion holdings."
Clara blinked, surprised. "An amendment?"
Leo slid a heavy parchment document across the mahogany table toward her.
Clara looked down at the paper. It wasn't an employment contract. It was a partnership deed—making her an equal co-director of the entire Castillion corporate and philanthropic network, with full voting rights on the board.
"You can't be serious," Clara breathed, looking up from the document to Leo's steady, smiling eyes. "I started as a temporary maid."

"And now you're the backbone of this family," Leo said clearly, his voice echoing across the silent, respectful room. "The empire was built on shadows and secrets for too long. It's time it was guided by someone who actually knows what it means to survive in the real world."
The entire table broke into quiet, approving applause. Clara looked around the room, feeling the profound weight of a new destiny settling firmly onto her shoulders.
