Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The heavy night air of Queens pressed against the threshold, smelling of asphalt and rain. Adrian stayed on his knee, his tailored coat dragging in the damp concrete, but he didn't care. His gaze remained locked on Emma, mapping every contour of her face as if memorizing a blueprint long denied to him.
“Sophia,” he breathed again, his voice lower this time, rougher around the edges. It was a sound that had once haunted my dreams, whispered against my skin in the dark sanctuary of a life I had fled. “Look at me.”
I didn't. I couldn't. Instead, I stared past his broad shoulder at the two men standing by the black SUV. Luca, his chief enforcer, and a younger guard whose hand hovered nervously near his holster. They were frozen, witnessing a scene no one in the Moretti syndicate would ever believe: the ghost who walked away, holding the ghost they didn't know existed.
“Go inside, Emma,” I murmured, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to steady it.
“Mommy, why is he crying?” Emma whispered, her small fingers clutching the hem of my scrubs.
Adrian flinched at the word crying. The ruthless shadow of the New York underworld didn't cry. But as he looked at the exact shape of Emma's jawline—the signature Moretti stamp—the iron facade cracked.
“I’m not crying, sweetheart,” Adrian managed, his voice fracturing on the vowel. He stood up slowly, deliberately, as if afraid a sudden movement would shatter the illusion. He looked at me, his gray-green eyes burning with a dangerous mix of fury, devastation, and a profound, aching realization. “You had six years. You took six years of my life, Sophia. And more than that... you took her.”
“I had to,” the words slipped out before I could trap them.

The air between us went instantly dead. Luca took a half-step forward from the SUV, his hand dropping away from his jacket as a silent warning rippled through the night.
Adrian held up a single gloved hand, never breaking eye contact with me. “Inside. All of you. Now.”
