Chapter 14 - The Breach at Dawn

The digital clock on the command console glowed 4:14 a.m.

Inside the Alpine estate’s upper-level monitoring room, three security guards sat before a wall of multi-split monitors displaying every angle of the sprawling property. The thermal cameras showed quiet lawns, swaying trees, and the dark silhouette of the perimeter wall.

“All quiet on sector four,” Guard Miller muttered, taking a sip from a paper cup of stale coffee.

“Check sector two again,” his partner murmured, leaning closer to the screen. “The motion sensor near the southern greenhouse just flickered. Might just be a deer, but—”

Before he could finish the sentence, the entire estate’s power grid stuttered and died.

The wall of monitors flickered violently before going completely black. Emergency backup generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the room in an eerie, dim red auxiliary glow.

“EMP,” Guard Miller cursed, slamming his hand onto the master alarm console. “They hit us with a localized electromagnetic pulse! Sound the general alarm—code red!”

Down in the sub-level safe suite, the red emergency lights flashed silently.

Sophia bolted upright from the sofa where she had been dozing lightly, her heart leaping into her throat. Across the room, Adrian was already on his feet, his tactical vest buckled over his shirt, a customized suppressed carbine locked and loaded in his hands.

“Stay inside the suite,” Adrian ordered, his voice commanding, leaving no room for argument. “The heavy blast doors are sealed from the inside. Nothing short of a tactical missile can penetrate this vault.”

“Adrian, what’s happening?” Sophia asked, rushing over to him, her hands gripping his arms. “Is it them?”

“Viktor,” Adrian said, his eyes cold and hard as steel. “He didn't try to breach the front gates. He bypassed the perimeter entirely.”

Before Sophia could ask what he meant, a muffled, concussive boom echoed through the foundations of the mansion. The floor trembled beneath their feet, sending a cascade of dust raining down from the ceiling vents.

Across the room, Emma woke up with a start, crying out in terror as Oliver wrapped his arms around her, trying to shield her from the noise.

“Daddy!” Emma sobbed.

Adrian looked back at them for one agonizing fraction of a second—a look of pure, agonizing love mixed with absolute lethargy-defying fury—before turning to the heavy steel door. “Mateo! Status!” he barked into his collar comms.

Static crackled across the channel. Then Mateo’s strained voice broke through: “Boss... they came through the old drainage tunnels beneath the wine cellar. Chemical gas—we’re losing the ground floor—”

The transmission abruptly cut off into a high-pitched squeal of feedback.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He turned to Sophia, grabbed her by the shoulders, and looked deep into her eyes. “Listen to me very carefully. If anything happens to me, you lock this door, you press the emergency extraction button behind the bookshelf, and you let the automated tunnel take you to the river boat. Do you understand?”

May you like

“No, Adrian, you’re not doing this!” Sophia cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “You’re coming back in here with us!”

Adrian pressed a fierce, desperate kiss to her forehead, then turned and strode out of the safe suite, slamming the heavy titanium door behind him. The locking mechanism engaged with a definitive, mechanical clank.
