Chapter 11 - The Phantom at JFK

The morning mist over the Hudson River burned away into a brilliant, crisp autumn sunlight, but inside the high-security perimeter of the Alpine estate, the atmosphere remained coiled like a tightened spring. Adrian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private communication room, the cold screen of a secured terminal casting a pale blue light across his sharp features. The burner phone he had retrieved from Luca’s secondary secure line lay on the mahogany desk, its screen still glowing with the message that had ended his fleeting moment of domestic peace: Vasiliev is dead, boss. But his younger brother just landed at JFK.
Viktor Vasiliev.
The name alone carried the weight of a blood-soaked dynasty across the Atlantic. While Dmitri Vasiliev had been a cautious, calculating strategist who preferred boardroom intimidation and backroom financial leverage, Viktor was a different breed entirely. Younger, volatile, and nursing an insatiable bloodlust, Viktor had spent the last three years in the brutal penal colonies of Siberia before shooting his way back to the top of the Bratva’s European faction. Now, he was on American soil, and his first target wouldn't be the syndicate’s shipping ports or drug corridors—it would be the vulnerability Adrian had so meticulously hidden for six years.
“He knows,” Mateo’s voice broke the silence of the room as the heavy oak door clicked shut. The senior guard stepped forward, his tactical vest replaced by a tailored charcoal suit, though the bulge of a Sig Sauer beneath his armpit remained unmistakable. “Our customs contacts at JFK confirmed it. Viktor traveled under a diplomatic passport issued through a shell corporation in Panama. He bypassed standard biometric tracking.”
Adrian didn’t turn around. His gray-green eyes remained fixed on the reflection of the sprawling New York skyline in the distance. “How many men?”
“At least a dozen elite operatives from the St. Petersburg Vympel unit,” Mateo answered grimly. “Ex-military, highly trained, and entirely loyal to Viktor. They aren't local thugs like the ones who hit your Queens safehouse last night, boss. These are professionals.”
Adrian slowly turned, his face carved from granite. The softness that had briefly touched his features when holding Emma hours earlier had completely vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating aura of the supreme commander of the Moretti empire. “They think because I stepped down from active council operations to secure my family, the crown is up for grabs.”
“They think you’re weak,” Mateo corrected quietly.
A dangerous, humorless smile touched Adrian’s mouth. “Let them try to take it. But they won't reach me through the ports or the warehouses. Viktor knows where the real leverage is.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “He’s coming for Sophia and the children.”

“The estate’s defenses are impenetrable,” Mateo argued. “We have motion sensors, thermal imaging, automated perimeter locks, and forty armed guards stationed around the property twenty-four hours a day—”
“Penetrameters can be breached, Mateo,” Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “And I am not leaving my family’s safety to automated sensors. Double the interior detail. Move Dr. Miller and the children into the sub-level reinforced safe suite immediately. And get me the encrypted satellite phone—I need to speak to the Director of Homeland Security before Viktor makes his first move.”
