Chapter 18 - The River Crossing

The automated transport car hummed smoothly along its subterranean rail line, gliding through the cool, damp darkness of the bedrock beneath New Jersey.

Inside the glass-paneled cabin, Emma and Oliver sat quietly, their small faces illuminated by the faint blue guide lights. Sophia sat on the bench seat opposite them, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she stared back down the dark tunnel they had just left behind.

She had escaped.

She had made it out of the burning estate, away from Viktor, away from the violence, and away from Adrian’s lethal world. She had achieved the exact thing she had spent six years planning for.

So why did her chest feel like it was being crushed by a physical weight?

“Mommy?” Emma whispered, tugging gently on Sophia’s sleeve. “Is Daddy coming with us?”

Sophia swallowed hard, blinking back the hot tears stinging her eyes. She pulled Emma into her arms, burying her face in her daughter’s fragrant hair. “No, baby. Your daddy... your daddy had to stay behind to take care of some very important business.”

“Will we see him again?” Oliver asked quietly from the corner of the seat, his wide eyes reflecting maturity far beyond his four years.

Sophia didn't have an answer. How could she explain to two children—one she had raised in secret, and one she had only just reunited with their father—that the man who had fought like a demon to protect them belonged to a world where happy endings were paid for in blood?

The transport car suddenly slowed to a gentle halt.

The glass hatch slid open with a soft pneumatic hiss, welcoming them into a small, private boathouse nestled along the marshy banks of the Hudson River. Moored at the wooden dock was a sleek, high-speed coastal cruiser idling quietly, its engine humming with power.

Waiting on the dock, holding a rolled-up canvas duffel bag and a secured satellite phone, stood Mateo. His suit was scorched and stained with soot, a white bandage wrapped tightly around his forearm, but his expression was resolute.

“Dr. Miller,” Mateo said respectfully, stepping forward to extend a hand to help Emma out of the transport car. “The boat is fueled and provisioned. It will take you down to a private airstrip in Delaware. From there, a charter plane is waiting to take you anywhere in the world you want to go.”

Sophia stood up slowly, lifting Oliver into her arms. She looked at Mateo, her eyes searching his hardened face. “And Adrian?”

Mateo paused, his jaw tightening slightly. He looked back toward the dark entrance of the subterranean tunnel before meeting Sophia’s gaze. “The boss cleared the estate. Viktor Vasiliev is dead. The Bratva’s American operation has been dismantled piece by piece as of twenty minutes ago.” Mateo’s voice dropped lower. “He gave us a direct order to ensure you and the children reached the extraction point safely. He didn't come with us.”

Sophia felt her breath catch in her throat. “He stayed behind.”

“He’s cleaning up the final pieces, Dr. Miller,” Mateo said quietly. “And then... he’s stepping down completely. For good.”
