Chapter 18 - The Final Echo

Far away, behind the thick, reinforced glass walls of a federal maximum-security penitentiary upstate, a solitary woman sat at a metal table.

Elena Thorne wore an orange jumpsuit, her silver hair unkempt, her hands folded neatly in front of her. On the small television screen mounted high in the corner of the dayroom, a financial news broadcast was playing.

The anchor’s voice echoed off the concrete walls:

"...and in corporate news today, Thorne Enterprises has announced a record-breaking fiscal year, solidifying CEO Marcus Thorne and his wife, Khloe Thorne, as the most influential philanthropic and corporate leaders in the country..."

Elena stared at the screen, watching Khloe and Marcus step out of Thorne Tower, smiling, radiant, and completely untouchable.

She reached out slowly, her fingers brushing the cold metal table.

There was no one left to call. No syndicate to activate. No shell corporation to rescue her.

She had tried to destroy a billionaire’s marriage, thinking she held all the cards. But in the end, she had simply created the stage for the true queen to rise.

The screen cut to a commercial, plunging the dayroom into silence.

Elena closed her eyes, finally accepting the one thing she had refused to understand from the very beginning:

Some thrones are not built on fear. They are built on fire.
