Chapter 6 - The Cliffside Cradle

The salt spray of the Atlantic Ocean crashed violently against the jagged obsidian rocks below the old Thorne Estate on Long Island. The mansion itself was a monolithic Victorian fortress of dark stone and ivy-covered walls, abandoned for decades after the supposed tragedy of the Swiss plane crash.
Inside the cavernous grand foyer, a massive crystal chandelier cast splintered shards of moonlight across the marble floor.
Khloe Thorne sat tied to a high-backed velvet armchair, her hands secured behind her with heavy industrial zip-ties. Her breathing was shallow, heavy, and tracked with pain, but her eyes were wide open, blazing with a fierce, defiant fury. Standing directly in front of her was an elderly woman wearing a sweeping black velvet gown, her silver hair pinned up in an immaculate, severe bun.
Elena Thorne.
The woman long declared dead, presiding over her stolen kingdom like a phantom queen.
"You have your father’s stubbornness, my dear," Elena murmured, reaching out with a manicured finger to lightly touch Khloe’s pregnant stomach. "Such a pity you married into a family whose blood is entirely toxic."
"You're insane," Khloe spat, wincing as a sharp contraction rolled through her lower abdomen. "Marcus will find you. Julian will tear this entire cliff down to sea level."
Elena let out a dry, aristocratic laugh. "Julian is currently sitting in a traffic collision on the Throgs Neck Bridge, surrounded by three semi-trucks that have conveniently broken down in every lane. And Marcus? Marcus is currently waking up from a very pleasant nap in the back of my nephew’s Bentley."
As if on cue, heavy oak doors at the far end of the foyer swung open with a loud bang.
Two armed guards dragged Marcus Thorne across the threshold, throwing him roughly onto his knees on the marble floor. A dark bruise stained his left temple, and a thin line of dried blood ran down his jawline.
"Khloe!" Marcus rasped, ignoring his own injuries as he locked eyes with his wife.
"I told you not to come alone," Khloe whispered, her voice cracking with exhaustion.
"Oh, stop the romantic heroics, Marcus," Elena sighed, turning away from Khloe and walking slowly toward the fireplace where a roaring blaze crackled behind a wrought-iron screen. "It’s so terribly cliché. You always were the sensitive one. Your father had the vision; I had the execution. But you? You actually thought you could run a global empire while playing house with a socialite."
Marcus struggled against the guards holding his shoulders, staring up at his stepmother with pure venom. "You died in Geneva, Elena. We paid thirty million dollars to the crash recovery teams to pull your body from the glacier."
"Money buys a lot of things, stepson," Elena smiled, turning around to face him, the firelight catching the cold, diamond rings on her fingers. "It buys a co-pilot who parachutes out over the French border. It buys a false dental record. And most importantly, it buys five years of quiet anonymity while you built up the Thorne logistics network to its absolute peak value."
"You orchestrated the hostile takeover," Marcus realized, his breathing accelerating. "Arthur, Isabella, David... they were all just front-men for your shadow syndicate."
"Front-men? No, they were merely tools," Elena corrected, walking closer and standing directly over him. "And tonight, the tool has served its purpose. With you dead of an apparent 'accidental fall' off the cliffside terrace, and your sweet wife dying of childbirth complications in an abandoned medical facility, the entire Thorne estate reverts to its primary surviving trustee."
She reached down, pulling a folded legal document from the pocket of her velvet gown.
"And who is that trustee, Marcus? Why, me."
Before Elena could finish her sentence, a low, rumbling mechanical sound echoed from outside the massive French doors overlooking the ocean cliff.
May you like
It wasn't the sound of a car engine.
It was the heavy, thrumming beat of twin turbine rotor blades.
