Chapter 8 - The Crimson Sky

The air inside the mobile ICU cabin of the Sikorsky helicopter was sterile, warm, and intensely focused. The emergency medical team had converted the rear seating area into a fully equipped delivery suite, complete with heart monitors, IV drips, and surgical trays.
Khloe lay on the medical cot, her breathing rapid and shallow, her fingers locked so tightly around Marcus’s hand that his knuckles were bruised.
"Push, Mrs. Thorne! One more strong contraction!" the chief obstetrician commanded, her voice steady and professional above the low roar of the engines.
Marcus knelt beside the cot, kissing Khloe’s damp forehead over and over again. "I'm here. I'm right here, sweetheart. You're safe. We're both safe."
"If this baby inherits your stubbornness, Marcus, I swear I'm divorcing you before the paperwork clears," Khloe gasped through a scream of pure exertion, her entire body arching upward.
"Approved!" Marcus laughed, tears finally breaking free and tracking down his cheeks. "Do whatever you want, just stay with me!"
A sharp, piercing cry echoed through the metal cabin.
The chaotic roar of the helicopter engines seemed to fade into the background, replaced by the most powerful sound in the universe.
"Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Thorne," the obstetrician smiled, lifting a squalling, healthy newborn wrapped in a warm sterile blanket and placing the infant directly onto Khloe’s chest. "A healthy baby girl. Nine pounds, two ounces."
Khloe broke down sobbing, wrapping her arms around her daughter while Marcus buried his face in her neck, holding them both so tightly as if letting go would make the nightmare return.
Sitting across the aisle, secured in a tactical seat with heavy steel cuffs, David Rossi stared blankly out the reinforced glass window. Below them, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen federal police cruisers and ambulance units illuminated the old cliffside estate, swarming the grounds like ants over a carcass.
Julian Vance sat beside David, holding a secure satellite tablet, scrolling through the newly decrypted corporate asset transfers that had just been routed from the Rossi banking server.
"It’s done, Marcus," Julian said without looking up, his voice carrying the calm satisfaction of a master chess player making the final checkmate. "The Swiss accounts have been frozen. The Rossi banking group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. By tomorrow morning, Thorne Enterprises will own ninety-eight percent of their primary logistics grid at pennies on the dollar."
Marcus looked up from his newborn daughter, holding Khloe’s hand with one arm and resting his free hand gently on his baby's tiny back.
"Leave them with nothing," Marcus said quietly, his voice devoid of anger, replaced by absolute, unshakeable authority. "Every asset. Every building. Every cent."

"Way ahead of you," Julian replied, sliding the tablet into his briefcase.
The helicopter banked smoothly over the coastline, turning toward Manhattan as the first rays of golden morning sunlight broke through the dark storm clouds, painting the entire skyline in a brilliant, triumphant crimson.
