Chapter 4 - The Corridor Conspiracy

The high-resolution video feed loaded onto the boardroom screen, replacing the static financial projections with grainy, high-contrast monochrome footage from the service hallway behind the VIP suite.

The time stamp read 10:14 PM—forty-five minutes before the gala downstairs reached its peak, and twenty minutes before Khloe retired to her private room.

On the screen, a slender figure in a dark hooded utility jacket walked briskly down the sterile hospital corridor. The person stopped directly in front of the electronic access panel for Suite 402. A small, pocket-sized cloning device was pressed against the sensor. A green light flashed once.

The door unlocked.

"The temporary override code was generated from an internal terminal," Elaine explained, her voice shaking slightly as she pointed a trembling finger at the screen. "Only three people in the entire hospital administration have administrative privileges to issue a master override for that wing: the hospital director, the head of security, and..."

She paused, swallowing hard.

"...and my direct supervisor, corporate liaison David Vance."

Julian Vance’s head snapped toward Elaine. "My nephew? David is working with the regional expansion team. What does he have to do with this?"

"Not David Vance, sir," Elaine corrected quickly, tapping a key on the laptop. "David Rossi. Isabella’s cousin. He was planted in our administrative contractor pool six months ago under an alias."

Marcus stared at the screen as the hooded figure on the footage turned around just enough for the security camera’s infrared lens to catch the profile of the jawline. It was unmistakable. It was David Rossi—the golden-boy financial analyst of the Rossi banking dynasty, who had spent the last year pretending to be a neutral third-party consultant for Thorne Enterprises.

"A corporate espionage play masked as a personal vendetta," Victoria muttered, her eyes narrowing as she calculated the legal implications. "They weren't just trying to destroy your marriage, Marcus. They were trying to manufacture a high-profile personal scandal to force you into a messy, public divorce right before the quarterly shareholder vote. If Khloe lost the baby under traumatic circumstances, your emotional capacity as CEO would be called into question. The board would invoke the emergency succession clause."

"And who would take over the interim CEO position?" Marcus asked, his voice dangerously low.

Victoria didn't need to check her notes. "Arthur Pendelton. With the backing of the Rossi banking bloc."

All heads at the table slowly turned toward Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur’s face was slick with sweat. He tried to stand, but his legs betrayed him. "This is insane! A complete fabrication! You can't pin a corporate coup on me just because some kid walked down a hallway!"

"Sit down, Arthur," Marcus said, stepping around the end of the table. He walked toward the older man with slow, deliberate strides. "You’ve been skimming from the European pension funds for three years. I let it slide because your grandfather helped build this company. But trying to kill my unborn child? That crosses a line."

"I didn't know about the attack!" Arthur blurted out, panic cracking his voice. "I swear to God, Marcus! Isabella said she was just going to scare Khloe into signing a pre-nuptial addendum! She said she wanted to prove Khloe was unfit so you'd annul the marriage quietly! I swear I didn't know she was going to hurt her physically!"

The confession hung in the air like poison gas.

Arthur realized what he had just said, clamping both hands over his mouth, but it was too late. The acoustic sensors in the boardroom—recording for official corporate minutes—had captured every single syllable.

Victoria clicked a button on her tablet, stopping the audio recording and saving the file to an encrypted cloud vault.

"Well," Victoria said calmly, sliding her tablet into her briefcase. "That eliminates the need for a lengthy discovery phase. Arthur, your resignation is effective immediately. Federal marshals are waiting in the lobby to escort you down to join Miss Rossi."

Arthur slumped forward onto the mahogany table, weeping quietly into his hands.

Marcus didn't look at him. He picked up his phone, dialing a direct, secure line that connected straight to St. Jude’s Private Hospital.

"Put me through to my wife’s suite," Marcus ordered the operator.

The phone rang twice before a familiar, cool voice answered on the other end.

"If you're calling to apologize for bringing these psychopaths into my life, save your breath, Marcus," Khloe’s voice came through the speaker—weak, but carrying a sharp, razor-edge of fury.

"The board is clean," Marcus said, ignoring her jab. "David Rossi and Arthur Pendelton are going away for twenty years minimum. Isabella is facing felony charges."

"Good," Khloe replied coldly. "Because you're going to need all your focus to deal with what’s happening here at the hospital right now."

Marcus froze. "What are you talking about? Where are you?"

"I'm not in my suite anymore," Khloe said, the sound of sterile hospital cart wheels squeaking softly in the background. "When your uncle Julian went to get coffee, a man in a doctor’s coat walked in and handed me a sealed envelope with your family crest on it."

"Khloe, listen to me very carefully," Marcus said, every muscle in his body locking up as a primal wave of dread washed over him. "Do not open that envelope. Do not let anyone into that room."

"Too late, Marcus," Khloe whispered softly. "I already read it. And it turns out... Isabella wasn't the master planner after all."
