Chapter 10 - The Ultimate TwistElena picked up the glowing smartphone from the floor of the van. The screen lit up, displaying a single, unencrypted message from an unknown sender:

“Protocol execution complete. Primary host terminated. Welcome online, Subject 001.”

Elena’s breath hitched. She stared at the message, her reflection staring back at her from the dark glass of the phone screen.

Behind her, footsteps echoed in the rain. Director Vance stepped out of the cathedral, holding an umbrella, looking at Elena with an expression that wasn't shock—it was recognition.

"You didn't know, did you, Elena?" Director Vance said softly, her voice calm amidst the pouring rain. "You thought you were Richard Vance's biological daughter. You thought your memories of growing up in the lake house were real."

Elena turned around slowly, the phone clutched tightly in her hand. "What are you talking about?"

"Richard didn't lose a daughter in the fire twenty years ago," Director Vance said, stepping closer. "He lost a prototype. The red collar wasn't a tracker, Elena. It was a stabilizer. And now that it's off..."

Director Vance raised her hand and pressed a small remote device hidden in her palm.

A sharp, electric pain suddenly surged behind Elena’s left ear. She gasped, dropping to her knees on the wet asphalt. The rainy street around her began to shift, the colors fracturing into streams of digital green code before snapping back into reality.

In her mind, a cold, automated voice whispered a final diagnostic check:

Elena looked up at Director Vance, a chilling smile slowly forming on her lips as the rain washed away the last human tears she would ever shed.
