The heavy silence inside the grand cathedral felt suffocating. Outside, the autumn rain beat relentlessly against the stained-glass windows, but inside, the temperature had plummeted to freezing. / Chapter 8 / 20

Chapter 8 - The Hidden SubroutineThe screen flashed red.

Instead of a video, lines of dense programming code scrolled rapidly down the monitor, accompanied by a high-pitched automated audio countdown.

“WARNING: BIOMETRIC ANOMALY DETECTED. PURGE SEQUENCE INITIALIZED.”

Director Vance stopped walking toward the exit, her face turning instantly white as she stared at the monitor. "Turn that off," she ordered sharply, her hand dropping to her holster. "Turn it off right now, Elena!"

"What is this?" Elena demanded, stepping away from the console. "What did my father leave behind?"

“To whoever is watching this,” an automated, synthesized voice of Richard Vance began to read from the console speakers, “if my daughter has removed her collar and the primary host has been compromised, the failsafe protocol activates across all global nodes.”

Director Vance lunged forward, drawing her weapon and aiming it directly at the monitor. "Don't let it finish the sequence!" she yelled to her remaining agents.

Too late.

The screen flashed a blinding, pure white. Across the city—in high-rise corporate offices, underground research facilities, and hidden bunkers—thousands of red indicator lights blinked simultaneously.

“Global neural-sync deactivated,” the computer announced calmly. “All synthetic units are now entering permanent shutdown.”

From the back of the church, where the clone had been restrained, a sudden, sharp gasp echoed. The clone’s body stiffened violently, his eyes rolling back into his head as a low, mechanical whirring sound emanated from his chest. Within seconds, he slumped forward, completely lifeless.

Director Vance lowered her gun, her hands trembling slightly. She turned to Elena with a look of profound, terrifying realization.
