Chapter 13 - The Ghost in the MachineThe entire control room went dead silent. The technicians held their breath, staring at the screen as lines of long-forgotten data began to unpack themselves onto the display.

"What did you just do?" Director Vance asked, her hand hovering near her holster, though the raw power radiating from Elena made drawing a weapon feel entirely futile.
"I didn't break the system, Director," Elena said, her voice echoing with a dual resonance—her own human voice layered with a crisp, digital undertone. "I just gave it back its memory. My father didn't build Project Janus to weaponize humanity. He built it to save us from something much worse."
"Save us from what?" Vance challenged, stepping closer. "The corporation spent billions funding this network to control global data streams, financial markets, and military defenses. It's a weapon of mass subjugation!"
"No," Elena replied, turning her head slowly to look the Director dead in the eye. "The corporation hijacked my father’s work six years ago. They twisted it. But the original protocol—the core code written into my neural matrix—was designed to find the real threat."
Elena tapped the glass interface twice.
The main screen split into four separate windows. Each window displayed live satellite footage of four different underground facilities scattered across the globe—facilities that didn't exist on any official government map.
"What are those?" a technician whispered.
"Those are the primary breeding grounds," Elena said coldly. "The corporation didn't just manufacture synthetic clones like Max to infiltrate human society. They created an entirely autonomous intelligence network—one that doesn't need human politicians, human boards of directors, or human rules anymore."
On screen, inside one of the underground bunkers, rows of incubation pods hissed open. In the dim, eerie green light, dozens of identical figures began to sit up, their eyes glowing with the exact same crimson hue that Max’s eyes had turned before he died.

"They're deploying the second wave," Director Vance gasped, horror washing over her face. "If those units reach the surface..."
"They won't," Elena interrupted, a fierce, determined spark flashing in her hazel eyes. "Because now that I'm online, I have the master override key. And I'm going to burn their entire network to the ground."
